MOD I/III

When I first started writing about SanSal in November 2004, I searched the web for information and pictures that I could use. I wanted pictures that I never took when I was there, 45 years ago: pictures of the GE MOD I, and perhaps even pictures of our equipment in the trailers...the consoles, etc. It was to no avail.

In fact, in my searches, I never found a SINGLE reference to General Electric radar systems: MOD I, MOD III or MISTRAM. Nothing. Not a single word. I found copious stuff on PanAm, RCA, Patrick AFB, all of the missiles. I did find the Museum at Canaveral Air Station and got in touch with Tony Brusca, the Assistant Curator. When I went to the Reunion of the AMRE in December 2004, I visited the Museum and Tony. It was there that I picked up some pictures and documents that are on the web site now.

Also, during that Reunion, I found documents that I copied from Chuck Flower, a Track Engineer on GMCF #1 and GE MOD III at Vandenberg. I also copied the rare notes that Darrel Hartung made to teach the operating details of MOD I/III Track.

In these pages, I will attempt to give you a picture of what this system was and how it worked. I am in the process of writing a book that will expand on this considerably.

For now, sit back click your mouse and re-discover the incredible magic of:

MOD I/System 4, San Salvador, Bahamas, circa 1958-1961.
