OLD RED
31 August 2000

FINALLY! The start of this project has been delayed...my retirement, travel, time and money. Anyway we started 2 days ago. With a total of 3 days, Brent and I have made great progress. With Old White, to get to this point took about 3 MONTHS!

The reasons for this progress are many, but the main reason is Brent's design architecture. With Old White, the front end was channeled from a Plymouth Volare. We did this to get the disk brakes, power steering and adjustable height. The drawbacks were: a narrow wheelbase and the "rear drive" steering box that interfered with the headers and crowded the steering u-joints up against the headers as well. On Old Red, Brent suggested the purchase of a late model donor car (green hornet) and "clipping" the entire front end on to the target. Well, it turned out even better than we had planned.

Since I have acquired a bunch of new tools (see retirement), we decided to do the disassembly/assembly at my house. We started on Tuesday morning and by Thursday afternoon, the clip was tack-welded onto the 64 Chevy. All of the leftover scrap was loaded on to the trailer and was taken to the crusher. They gave us $16 for 2100 pounds of scrap metal.

First step:

Disassemble the Green Hornet. This involved the removal of the front end sheet metal and fenders, disconnecting all of the computer and engine wiring, fuel line, radiator, air conditioning condenser, rear brake lines, steering column and a bunch of other stuff. Then GH was winched up on the trailer for the cutting away the front end. In this way, as we removed the clip and the rear end, the body would be in position to be taken to the crusher.

We salvaged the power brake unit, brake pedal and the gas tank, all of which will be used in building Old Red.

L to R: Starting disassembly (Brent on the phone, as usual) / all sheet metal removed and all lines, etc disconnected / On the trailer.

Firing up the cutting torch / first cut to remove the entire front end, engine & tranny / second cut

L to R: "the clip" removed from GH / something missing? / Parted...

L to R: disassembly of Old Red / more stripping / all but the engine

Second step:

Removal of engine from Old Red, clipping off the old front end, grafting the front end from the Green Hornet on to Old Red.

L to R: removal of the engine & tranny from Old Red

L to R: Ready for clipping / gas tank removal & another phone call / Stripped

L to R: Clipping Old Red / more clipping

L to R: Lining up the new front end / more adjustment / measurements / first weld

Tack welds / clip tacked in place

All the stuff from Old Red and the Green Hornet that will be restored and rebuilt on to the new street rod

Loading up all the left overs...2100 pounds to the crusher...$16 profit, OBOY

For fun, a bumper thru the windshield? / now this would be a surprised driver!

Unloading the remains at the crusher

Much, Much more to come...stay tuned!
