Gallery of projects over the years...a few that are special to me

Most of the projects that come out of High Country Woods are inspired by Virginia. We usually talk through the idea while I make sketches. Sometimes she suggests a plan from a book or Woodcraft. When the project begins, she is seldom around, but when it comes to the final stages, she shows up and many times helps with the finishing. The set of projects below were clearly inspired by Virg.

Smorgasbird
Giant bird feeders that hold 100 pounds of feed at a time. During the winter, with the hundreds of quail, pheasant and other non-migratory birds, these feeders get filled once a week. The base material is marine plywood and cypress to resist the weather. They are finished with UV Plus, a penetrating finish that resists the effect of sunlight. The plastic roofs and sides are either plexiglass or horticulture panels. We have built 3 and are going to build one more for our neighbors.

L to R: Tables & Lamps

Table and lamp: the lamp can be extended up or down to suit. Material is oak, with a light stain and Deft final. The lamp is laminated with padauk and maple, the body is oak.

Tiered table: My favorite, triangular to fit a corner arrangement, mitered and tiered quarter sawn oak ply, banded with 8/4 quarter sawn oak, 1 1/4 radius roundover edge treatment. Light oak stain with Deft on top.

Tablelamp: table with built-in lamp that extends from the rear corner to the center of the table. Same qs oak mitered ply with qs 8/4 oak banding.

Highchair:
First project using cypress. It has a nice look when finished unstained with Deft. Easy material to work with, fairly soft, but has a very nice warm look to it.

Regulator Clock:
Scratchbuilt from a plan from a company that went broke. Very nice crown molding, mostly hand shaped, dentil moulding, beveled glass. Two weight cable driven Hermile bim-bam movement. Pocelain dial...just an excellent piece. I built this one in 1986.
